The challenges of not being able to afford the essentials are felt even more acutely by certain groups, including veterans with children in the household and those with physical and mental health conditions.

Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Trussell found that many veterans are struggling to meet basic needs and afford the essentials, with many falling behind on household bills and credit commitments. The situation for families with children is even worse, with alarming rates of food insecurity leaving families having to make difficult decisions to get by such as leaning on high interest lenders to access cash. Furthermore, veterans with physical and mental health conditions are finding life difficult because of their financial circumstances, with many unable to heat their home, losing sleep and not being able to spend time with family and friends.

This research is further evidence that people across the UK are not receiving the support they need to afford the essentials, including people who have served in our armed forces.
